The Benson Hospital Laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to meet the medical laboratory testing needs of the San Pedro Valley Hospital District.  The Laboratory is divided into two physical locations: a blood drawing room in the hospital located across from the Admitting Department, and a main laboratory where testing occurs located in a modular building on the northern face of the hospital across from the Emergency Room.  These two locations are devoted to the testing needs of inpatients, outpatients, and emergency patients.

Regular hours of operation are:

  • Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

  • Saturday 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM

  • Sunday 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM

  • with all other hours covered by on call staff who are available within 10 minutes of being called.

  • Routine test results are generally available to physicians within 2 hours and urgent test results are available within one hour of being ordered.

Results are available to the ordering provider through a variety of methods.  They can be auto faxed, hand faxed, phoned directly to the provider, printed out and hand delivered,  mailed, or printed out remotely at the delivery site.  Of course, in this electronic age results are available to providers on line via the hospital's information system.  Patients can obtain copies of their lab results by signing a release form in the Health Information department.  With the signed release, the patient may then receive a paper copy from the Laboratory Technician on duty.  The signed release and paper copy method is the only way patients can obtain copies of their lab results.

Chemistry testing includes metabolic profiles, electrolytes, therapeutic drug testing, endocrine testing, and various analytes useful to the physician's diagnostic needs.  These are carried out on Abbott platforms which include the Architect 8000, and the Axsym.  These platforms employ multiplex testing with high throughput capabilities, excellent sensitivity and specificity, and quick turnaround times.  Cardiac testing includes these platforms and the handheld I Stat platform which expands the cardiac menu and serves as a backup to critical results.  Hematology testing is mainly accomplished on the Cell Dyne 3700, an Abbott based system that both counts and identifies blood cells.  Certain body fluids such as spinal fluid, joint fluid and body fluids are counted and examined manually, using the microscope and a hemocytometer. Urinalysis, Coagulation and Serology employ various combinations of automated and manual techniques. In the area of Coagulation, Benson Hospital Laboratory performs prothrombin and partial thromboplastin testing for Coumadin and heparin therapy patients.  We have many such patients, some of whom have results sent to providers in other states and other countries.

Microbiology testing at Benson Hospital Laboratory is performed on a limited basis.  Gram stains, rapid strep testing, testing for influenza and respiratory syncinctial virus, monocytosis, and select other infirmities are performed on site.  Cultures and sensitivities are sent out to reference laboratories, with results available within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the organism grown.  This particular spectrum of testing has been designed to support the provider's need for diagnostic timeliness so that treatment, when indicated, can be started as soon as possible.

The Blood Bank is perpetually stocked with 3 units of O positive, 3 units of A positive, and 3 units of O negative packed red blood cells.  When needed urgently, the O negative stock can be administered immediately.  For less urgent cases, crossmatching and preparation of blood for administration usually takes 1 to 2 hours.  Fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, and platelets are available through the American Red Cross and can be available for administration within 2 to 4 hours.  Other more esoteric blood products are available through the Red Cross, and require longer times to delivery.

Our staff in the Laboratory consists of 4 Laboratory Assistants who work in the Blood Drawing Room, and for limited purposes in the main Laboratory, and 6 Laboratory Technicians who perform the testing.  The Laboratory Assistants have all completed recognized programs in Phlebotomy/Lab Assisting.  The Laboratory Technicians have all completed recognized programs in Medical Technology and are certified by either the American Medical Technologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, or American Association of Bioanalysts.  The laboratory is under the technical direction of a Ph. D. Clinical Laboratory Director, and under the medical direction of a Board Certified, MD, Ph. D. Pathologist.

The Benson Hospital Laboratory is licensed by the State of Arizona for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) accreditation.  The State inspects the Laboratory every 2 years, following which a new license is issued. This program consists of samples of unknown concentrations of each analyte offered by the Laboratory test menu.  Three times a year, the Laboratory receives 5 challenges for each analyte that are tested,  sent to the proficiency testing service, graded, and reported to the State.  Benson Hospital Laboratory has consistently performed excellently, posting scores in the 98 to 100 % range.

Benson Hospital Laboratory is proud of its record of service and performance.  We continue to serve the overall mission of the Benson Hospital by seeking to exceed our customers' expectations.  Our goal is to provide competent, caring, timely, discreet and accurate laboratory testing to the residents and visitors of the San Pedro Valley Hospital District.
