Emergency Department

High quality, 24-hour emergency care is only minutes away from your home. The Benson Hospital emergency physician and nursing staff are specially trained to provide emergency care, including trauma, cardiac or respiratory care. Based on the needs of the patient, quick transfer can be made to nearby facilities or admission at Benson Hospital.

Ground has been broken and construction will soon begin for the new emergency department. It will expand to accommodate 12 beds, secured admitting, CT scans, isolation room with separate entrance and urgent care unit.

Laboratory

The Benson Hospital Laboratory is staffed and equipped to offer state-of-the-art laboratory technology to residents of the San Pedro Valley District and beyond.  This includes testing in the areas of: Chemistry, Blood Banking and Transfusion services, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Toxicology, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, and limited Microbiology.  Testing that is not done here is collected and forwarded to an appropriate reference laboratory facility for the convenience of our customers.

The Benson Hospital Laboratory is certified and licensed by the State of Arizona as a full service laboratory, and is inspected for compliance by the Division of Laboratory Licensure.  Laboratory licensure is monitored by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act department of the federal government.  Our current license is valid until November of 2007.

The dedicated staff at Benson Hospital Laboratory has many years of experience in the field.  They have been carefully selected and are held to continuing education requirements imposed by the industry.  The staff consists of Technologists, Technicians, and Phlebotomists, all certified in their individual specialties.

Physicians are notified of laboratory results by phone or by fax, making it possible to serve the needs of patients who come from other areas, such as our beloved snowbirds.  Most laboratory tests are done within 1 to 2 hours of specimen collection.  We strive to have emergency lab results available in an hour.

The Benson Hospital Laboratory serves the overall mission of the Benson Hospital by seeking to exceed our customers expectations.  By carefully observing the test ordering habits of our physician population, we have developed a test menu that reflects the needs of our patients.  Our goal is to provide competent, caring, timely, discreet, and accurate laboratory services to the physicians who serve our patients.  We look forward to serving you.

Gary K. Maluf, Ph. D. Clinical Laboratory Director (NCA)

Hospice Services
Hospice is about comfort care and dignity. It is Medicare benefit, and as such, there are certain criteria that need to be met. To receive hospice services, a person must be terminally ill, and have a prognosis of six months or less to be on home hospice services. The hospice nurses are affiliated with Tucson Medical Center's Hospice program. If there is a symptom that cannot be controlled at home, or if the family cannot manage the care at home, the patient can be admitted to the hospice inpatient unit at TMC, or at the Benson Hospital, until the symptoms are managed, at which time the patient would go back home, where they are the most comfortable and happy. For more information, call Benson Hospital and ask for the hospice nurse.

Other Outpatient Services
Benson Hospital provides a wide variety of outpatient services including chemotherapy, IV antibiotics, injections and EKGs. Outpatient programs include cardiology, podiatry, women's health and hearing tests.

Free blood pressures are taken by request at the Nurses' Station.
